Textured Dragon Art, Flowers on Sale and FREE Rusty Kit!

Filed under Art Projects, Back in Stock, Flowers, Giveaways, Lora Mahaffey, Rhonda Secrist Thomas, Sale, Teri Calia

Note: most of the links on this post no longer work, as we moved to a new Web site in 2018. However, you can see the supply lists for both projects on the new site: Teri’s Nature Encroaches, Lora’s It’s All About the Shoes!.

We have a wonderfully textured piece today by Teri Calia: Nature Encroaches, a mixed media canvas!

(And if all that rust and moss isn’t your thing… see below for TWO humorous takes on Cinderella’s coach!)

I love what Teri has done here; so many layers and natural textures of rocks, water, rust and moss (and handmade mushrooms). Bravo!

This all started with the new heavy chipboard Dragon Sconce shown at left (and look how it has been transformed)!

Teri does a great job of showing all the layers and steps she took to build up her textures in her blog post. (Psst… check below too, as there’s a new FREE Gift Kit that includes some of the items Teri used.)

And RUST. Don’t forget the rusted patina (more than a flat patina… this dragon (and lantern) have a dimensional rusted patina). Teri used the Finnabair Art Extravagence Rust Paste Set and says, “I love this stuff because it allows you to create realistic rust without the use of harsh chemicals.

Ok… enough of me babbling. Go see more photos and steps on Teri’s blog. And see all her supplies. (And come back and enter the Giveaway, too.)

A NEW SALE: ALL Paper Flowers (and leaves… moss… botanicals) are on sale for 30% off (including things like the twigs & moss in Teri’s artwork)! The sale ends FRIDAY night at midnight PST (March 3, 2017). That’s a big section: 150 items! And it includes the recent new mulberry paper flowers from Thailand! Go see ’em all!

On to more artwork! Design Team Members Rhonda Secrist Thomas and Lora Mahaffey have each made a fun version of the Cinderella Coach Album:

Rhonda’s If Cats Ruled is the perfect book for the cat lover in your life. Or yourself. Or your cats?

Rhonda has made the entire album with characters from the 2 Louis Wain Cat Paper Dolls Collage Sheets (and a few other images of Cinderella with cat or lion heads added to their bodies). Adorable!

“I just received a huge box of vintage lace and beaded trims while I was in the process of considering what embellishments I wanted to add. Talk about perfect timing.” Wow… I think we need a field trip to go shopping in Rhonda’s craft room!

Visit Rhonda’s blog post to see lots more photos. And here’s a link to all her supplies.

Next up: Lora’s It’s All About the Shoes! I love what’s she done (using Copic pens to amp up the color of the image from the Cinderella Pining Collage Sheet… and of course: that thought bubble)!

“And the girl was rocking the most awesome pair of shoes in fairy tale history and she goes and loses one running down the steps at the royal palace! That is harsh.
She does end up okay in the end.
She gets her shoe back.
That is the important thing, right?”

Read more witty prose, and see more photos in Lora’s blog post. And here’s her supply list.

Nature Encroaches FREE Mini Kit! Inspired by Teri’s amazing Nature Encroaches Canvas, this mini kit contains mossy, rusty elements to start your own collage or canvas.

This kit includes rusty wire (binding a little whiskbroom-like cut from a Twig Vine Garland), a glass bottle filled with Leafy Green Underbrush, a red mushroom, and a few more trinkets — all wrapped up in a bit of vintage sewing pattern tissue (check out Teri’s blog post… she uses similar tissue as the base layer on her canvas).

Plus an exclusive Mushrooms Collage Sheet designed by Teri, just for this kit!

The mini kit is FREE for all orders over $20!

There's nothing you need to do (no coupon to enter). TODAY through Saturday night, March 4th (midnight PST) (March 2-4, 2017), or until the kits are gone, we’ll include a free kit in all qualifying orders!

AND everybody gets the Mushrooms collage sheet in their order, no matter the size of order!

Read more about it on the Nature Encroaches Mini Kit page.

I am absolutely in love with the Dragon sconce. I’d love to create an art piece with it!

  2. Kat Cashwell says:

Love the dragon sconce and the rusty look! I would have to incorporate the “If Cats Ruled” paper in the carriage!

  3. Kim R says:

I’m actually working on a mixed media dragon canvas at the moment, so that Dragon sconce would be perfect! It’s the FIRE that I need,

  4. K Toews says:

The dragon is great! I would like to use him as a mount over a fireplace for the victorious knight.

  5. Ina Good says:

Coach Album….I would do Alice in Wonderland with cats including Chesire cat and the white Rabbit in a flower garden coach setting.

  6. Kathlene Ford-Walters says:

The coach–so want to do a dark themed pumpkin headed headless figure as the driver. Cool stuff. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Jennifer Bumb says:

I would use the carriage as a Halloween spooky prop. I know it is a little early for Halloween, but I an just envision it painted black with many decorations of the creepy nature.

  8. Rebecca Russell says:

Thank You again for another fab giveaway! I would use the Coach first.. decorating it with Cinderella on her way to a ball being chased by a dragon! lol! 🙂

  9. Betty geist says:

I just love everything on you website
You mind can go crazy and I have the perfect paper for the coach

  10. barb macaskill says:

Whichb would I use first? That is a good question because I am exited to use both of them! I think the Dragon Sconce would win because once I get the paste on it, it will have to dry so I can then start working on the Cinderella Coach! Best of both worlds that way!!
I really love what the designers have done with their goodies and can’t wait to give a few of their techniques a try!! Fingers crossed! macaskillbarbara @yahoo.com

  11. ginger mcteague says:

eeewwwwwwwwwwwwww! I really covet the dragon sconce! Don’t know yet how I’ll decorate it…. but it will hang above the entry to the cottage of the sorceress who helps the castle ladies with all their maladies.

  12. Cheryl Lee says:

For sure the Coach first as I love cats! And I love those kitty collage sheets! Congrats to Karen!

  13. OMG!!!! That rusty dragon sconce really caught my eye! So awesome!

  14. Traci says:

I love the coach album especially after seeing Rhonda’s If Cats Rule (which by the way they do at least in my house). I would love to make one of them and put my cats pictures in it-too cute!! >^..^<

  15. michelle says:

I would use the dragon sconce first. I really love the way she has decorated it.

  16. Kim Lucak says:

I think I would make a wedding coach!

  17. Peg D says:

Think the sconce would be the first project. I have one of those little industrial lanterns that would look sweet hanging there. What a great giveaway! I would love to have this. Love those Wain cats! Great inspiration for the coaches too

  18. Laural says:

Dragon sconce on a nearby tavern with the coach decorated for a witch

  19. Emily Dale says:

Love the dragon sconce!!! First project!

  20. LeAnn says:

I love the dragon sconce and the rusty look. I would attempt that.

  21. Deb Young says:

Rusty was not on my radar until I saw this dragon sconce. I’m thinking forgotten garden with an old stone wall, the sconce, of course, iron gates, one broken from its top hinge and falling forward, and lots of wildlife.
Cats in Cinderellas coach, definitely, and kittens lost kittens, so why not shoes

  22. Randi scholl says:

I adore the dragon sconce and I want it rusty, but my son is getting married and I would love to do a wedding coach album as a keepsake for his new bride so that would have to be first. Might have cats in it because she loves cats.

  23. Iris says:

I like the dragon and coach. I like the rust effect on the dragon. I think I would use the dragon first. I would create a dioramas featuring the dragon, since I love making things in shadowboxes.

  24. Barb A says:

Not sure which I would do first but am thinking of bashing the sconce & having it pulling the coach!

  25. Jennie Ingram says:

    Dragon sconce!!!

  26. Jen C says:

Oh my goodness!!! The rusty dragon sconce is to die for! I love it! And the little mushrooms making a home at the bottom, love it!!

  27. Karen Mallory says:

It is fun winning a giveaway! Thanks! I love the rusty dragon sconce! I would definitely use the dragon first. Have to think more when making a mini album, so it takes longer to get into that type of project.

  28. Mary Mac says:

I would love to work with the dragon sconce first.

  29. Jean Marmo says:

My goodness – so creative!Love the rusty dragon sconce!

  30. Megan Warren says:

I’d use that dragon sconce first! Those cats in the Cinderella coach can wait.

  31. Marilyn lLynsk y says:

    The cats are the best!

  32. Denise Bryant says:

Love that rusty lantern! Awesome look!
I’d do the coach first and make it Halloween-y!

  33. Angie G says:

This is a tough decision. I love both of them so much. I’ve wanted to make the coach since I first saw it but the Dragon sconce is wonderful. I think I would have to make the dragon first and both would be in a gothic style.

  34. Roe says:

I have a fairy door by my front door. I’d love to do the rusty sconce and put it by the door. Also, I have 2 great nieces that just turned 5. I would use the cinderella coach album in some way to celebrate them. I honestly don’t know which one I would do first.

  35. Beth says:

That Cinderella with the attitude really tickled me! I might recreate that one first. As for the dragon lamp, it will be perfect for a mini Green Dragon pub in celebration of 15 year anniversary of The Lord Of the Rings movies!

  36. Carol Slowik says:

I would start with the Cinderella Coach. I am also a cat lover so this one would be so much fun to do! Like Rhonda, I have quite a stash of antique lace and embellishments. This project would be perfect for some of them!

  37. Dragontears says:

I collect dragons…just gotta add this one. I like the canvas idea. It is gorgeous. But I’m not sure how well I can do the rust thing. I’ll have to think on it a while. Got a lot of great texturing info from Teri’s blog. Thanks so much for sharing.

  38. Jo says:

I would like to try the rusty application on the dragon – that looks really cool!

  39. Marie Weddle says:

Would love to play with the dragon first, although I am torn….love the cat coach too!! 🙂

  40. Kathleen Cole says:

I would definitely use the dragon first; I don’t know that I would rust it, but somehow I’m visualizing it coming through the wall of some little house…..The coach and cats are great! I love cats, but I would be very tempted to make that coach some kind of vehicle for a group of drunken witches who have lost their brooms…..

  41. Cynthia Penney says:

I would do the dragon sconce first. My brother is a tattoo artist and I would have him do a Japanese dragon using the sconce for the shape. I think it will be awesome.

  42. Evelyn Reyes says:

Would love to convert into something unsual.

    Ev

  43. Kimberly says:

Dragon sconce of course. My maiden name,e (Dragone) means dragon in Italian! I would use some building paste in green and gold over a textured (mounding paste) stenciled surface. Wouldn’t that be cool?!
