    Susan Yee, California, USA

By profession, I am a Microbiologist working for several medical centers in the San Francisco Bay area for about 35 years.

About 30 years ago I started as a scrapbooker and quilter — making things for friends and co-workers. Soon after, my best friend and I started a small crafting business making baby porcelain dolls, gift baskets, etc. selling only at Art and Wine festivals. We closed the business when we both had children and I continued to make diaper cakes and wedding towel cakes for co-workers. After the passing of my father, I was inspired to start creating a variety of shadow boxes – some in memory of co-workers’ loved ones, others as retirement gifts, wedding gifts, and baby gifts.

Lately I have been creating “shadow boxes” about daily events, be it a simple visit to a tea shop in Berkeley, visits to Starbucks, or about my daughter, Lena, leaving to college.

I was very blessed to be published in Legacy. It was a scrapbook layout I did for a co-worker in memory of her daughter Shannon who tragically passed in a car accident at the age of 16.

Art is for everyone, I learned by experimenting with mediums and techniques. So to inspire others, I share my work by teaching. Once or twice a month after work, I teach mixed media art classes to my co-workers. I have been very fortunate that the company I work for allows me the space to do so. Although I have never had any formal training in art, I am constantly inspired by my family, friends, and co-workers.
