Birds & Cages and Tales of Roses

Filed under Art Projects, Birds & Cages Kit, Collage Sheets, Giveaways, Kristin Batsel, Lora Mahaffey, Nichola Battilana

Note: most of the links on this post no longer work, as we moved to a new Web site in 2018. However, you can see the supply list items from Kristin’s, Nichola’s and Lora’s projects that are still available on the new site.

A quick reminder before getting to today’s newsletter: The 20% off Sale on the ENTIRE Ceramic Beads Section ENDS TOMORROW NIGHT (Monday, April 4th)! (And a bonus: the TEN New Ceramic Beads are also included in the Sale! See last Thursday’s newsletter for more info.)

Pretty, shabby chic papers were the inspiration for this Birds & Cages Kit. With a mix of vintage handwritten letters, roses, lace and sheet music, they have subtle textures perfect for the base of a romantic collage (and two collage sheets will provide lots of options for a focal point). Plus the kit includes new metal charms and a petite chipboard bird cage set.

There is also a related Tales of Roses Add-On Kit with a similar romantic theme, but with more saturated colors… more info below.

Back to what is in this kit, there are THREE 12″ x 12″ scrapbook papers; two from the House of Roses line (a related 6×6 pad is also available, though not included in the kit) and one sheet from the Serendipity line (again, there is another sheet available). Note: I’m showing the fronts & backs of the 3 sheets in the photo at right.

This kit also includes TWO collage sheets:
New! Victorian Ephemera – Birds Collage Sheet (A variety of bits and bobs… recolored and amended to work with the palette of the Birds & Cages Kit — and with birds sized to fit the new 2″, 3″ and 4″ chipboard cages… more on those cages is below.)
Blue Birds Collage Sheet (Beautiful images from the vintage postcard collection of Wendy Anderson. More collage sheets by Wendy are under the Polliwog & Dragonfly name.)

Two new charms:
Fancy Silver Birdhouse Charm (So cute! And I love how Kristin cut a little window to fit this charm into one of her tags — see artwork below.)
Silver Bird Connector Charm (With 2 loops so you can hang it as a charm, with an extra loop at the bottom for a little dangly bead — or using it as a connector between 2 lengths of chain.)

And finally, the 2 Inch Cage with Solid Back! A sweet little 2-part chipboard birdcage, laser cut from lightweight chipboard. See the artwork below (or at right) for this bird cage in a set of mixed tags, and also used as a hat! More info on Lora’s clever card.

(There are also related 3″ and 4″ bird cages, and a fancier 2-part cage is in the add-on kit.)

More info, photos and artwork are on the Birds & Cages Kit page.

Next up, the Tales of Roses Add-On Kit!

Ooo… pretty! I love the Tales of You & Me collection, in shades of mauve, tan & pink (that inspired this kit).

This kit contains:

New! THREE 12×12 Scrapbook Papers from the Tales of You & Me collection. Note: I’m showing the fronts & backs of the 3 sheets in the photo.

New! Doodled Cage with Solid Back (A sweet little 2-part chipboard birdcage… half of the set is in my hand in the photo at left. It could also be used as a gazebo. Approx. 3-1/2″ wide x 3-3/4″ tall.)

New! Mini Birds & Nests Shape Set (A nice mix of shapes, including 4 eggs, a 2-part nest, 2 bird houses, and 2 each of 3 styles of birds. 14 pieces)

Two new charms:
Bronze Swallow Charm
Bronze Bird on Branch Charm

AND 3 collage sheets:
New! The Caged Bird Collage Sheet (Hm… is it the bird or the mistress who is the caged one? Still, pretty Victorian images, chosen for their dusty pink, tan and mauve colors to coordinate with this kit.)
Over the Garden Wall Collage Sheet (Beautiful images from the vintage postcard collection of Wendy Anderson. More collage sheets by Wendy are under the Polliwog & Dragonfly name.)
Women & Flowers Collage Sheet (Women with roses (and carnations) and a floral border from covers of vintage seed catalogs.)

More info, photos and artwork are on the Tales of Roses Add-On Kit page. And beside the lovely photos of the Floral Box with Hinged Lid (with tags, at left, by Kristin Batsel) and The Bird House by Nichola Battilana, there’s a whole Gallery of artwork by the Design Team using both of these kits! (To be updated throughout the month.) And/or read about each piece on Nichola’s or Kristin’s blogs.

I think I would make it a 3D birdcage and have little gnomes or Trolls inside it! Lots of vinery on the outside to keep them from being able to escape and a watchdog outside the cage just in case they DO escape!!! Great kits!!

  8. Carolyn Bowlby says:

I love the idea of making a bird cage, but it surely would also have some space for a fairy or two to come and go at will. Afterall, someone would need to keep an eye on the birds.

This is a beautiful set and I can see using it on antique scrap book pages.

  10. Lou Conaway says:

The larger cage looks like it would make a beautiful rose covered gazebo with appropriate sized paper gardens and roses, a small table and chairs inside to take in the view. I’d put the smaller birdcage and tiny bird in the lower branches of a tree with outdoor furniture or a retaining wall just low enough to frustrate an adventurous cat.
I love this one and everything that goes with it. Perfect choice for Spring.
