Grimm’s Fairy Tarot?!

This is such a great idea! Design Team Member Laura Carson made fairy tale tarot cards and a pretty tin to houses them (made from an Altoids Tin). Beside that lovely cover at left, scroll down to see some of the cards (and a photo of the back cover down in the Giveaway).

As Laura says in her blog post:

I was racking my brain trying to think of some kind of interesting twist on the Snow White Kit theme and the idea of fate popped into my mind. I decided to expand the theme beyond Snow White by including other Grimm fairy tales which in turn led to the idea of making Tarot cards.

For me the best part of the project was choosing the images for each card (there were so many to choose from). My favorites are Red Riding Hood as The Fool, Puss in Boots as the Knight of Swords and Sleeping Beauty pricking her finger as the Wheel of Fortune.

Hm… I think Rapunzel as The Hermit is a witty choice, too.

And don’t you fret about making your own set, Laura is giving away the collage sheet with the labels for the entire deck (although she only made 15 cards, as that number would fit in an Altoids Tin). AND she has a good suggestion/link to a past tutorial on hinging 2 tins together to make room for more cards.

Laura is also giving away the little snippet of text she designed (“TAROT”) to coordinate with the words “GRIMM’S” and “FAIRY” from the Grimm Covers #3 Collage Sheet so you can recreate her cover title.

I love that dark red and gold border around the covers, too (also from the Grimm Covers #3 Collage Sheet). And the scallopy chipboard frame (and label holders) are from the Fairy Tale Frames Altoid Inserts Set.

If you’re wondering about that rich golden frame with the round center opening (at right, on the inside cover of the tin), Laura used the Altoids Dragons Insert, colored with Victorian Gold Metal Patinas (from the Treasured Heirloom Set). She also used that gold to cover the tin before adhering images, so that any gaps would be golden, instead of shiny tin.

So… ready to start thinking up your own Grimm’s Fairy Tarot? Before you begin, head over to Laura’s blog to read more tips. And don’t forget the Giveaway below, where you can win tons of the supplies Laura used!

  20. Lou Anne says:

I saw this yesterday on Laura’s blog and loved it! I’d use the Fairy Tales covers for some of the tarot cards but would look through my own stash for a few as well. These are awesome!

  21. Margaret D says:

What a fantastic idea!!! I love Tarot cards!!! I think Sleeping Beauty would make a lovely Le Morte card and I love the cover of her Altoid tin and would probably use it as my star. There is a wonderful Parrish painting shown in your article that would make Le Monde or even the Moon. This is such a great idea! And the link for joining two tins bc I would never have been able to find it lol! I would just love to win this! I have have some Tarot decks but would love to make my own! As usual Alpha Stamps is the greatest 🙂

  22. Suzanne Goding says:

Oh I simply LOVE the idea of tiny fairy tarot cards! I have an old Grimms Illustrated fairy tale book. I’m a fan of ALL of them but the Little Red Riding Hood pictures terrified me as a child. I think I’d be using them for my projects.

I would love to win this. Fingers crossed!

  23. Kathlene Ford-Walters says:

    Definitely the dragon theme.

  24. Lisa R. says:

    The lovers!

  25. De says:

What an awesome idea! I would use the Grimms fairytale theme since there’s so much material to choose from. Like the idea of the using two tins housed together for more cards. Would focus on creating all of the major arcana cards.

  26. Laural says:

Beatrix Potter is my favorite collection and I would make a Tarot Deck using Her images for Easter and Springtime themes.

Love the snow white theme-Laura always inspires me with her fantastic projects. >^..^<

  33. Lorna E says:

I love Tarot sets and have a small collection of them, so I love Laura’s project! I would use a fairy godmother from Fairy Godmother images for the Queen of Wands and would have to decide between 2 images from Sleeping Beauty for The Lovers.

  34. The Lovers for Valentine’s Day of course..

  35. Janet T says:

Beautiful! I would love to se the Rapunzel theme.

  36. Nancy E says:

I’d create with Rapunzel or Sleeping Beauty. Hard to make a choice.

  37. Linda D. says:

I, too, collect tarot decks and amazingly I’ve never considered making my own deck until I saw Laura’s project. I love how she made the images her own by interpreting them through the major arcana. It’s hard to top her choices. Exploring the court cards, I’d probably want to use Rapunzel as the Queen of Swords, but I’d also love to use some images from other collage sheets as well – like using the White Rabbit for the Page of Swords.
This project has opened up a world of possibility! Thanks for the inspiration!

  38. Kari Gluski says:

My daughter loves Snow White so I’d be happy to go with that theme

  42. Megan Warren says:

I love the whole idea of this kit. I’d love to make the whole fairy tale themed deck of cards with this kit to add to my collection of Tarot cards.

  43. Stacia says:

I’d use the upper left Fairy Godmother (the pot) for Ace of Cups and the bottom left Rapunzel (Seaside castle) for the Queen of Cups. I don’t know that I could pull off all 72 cards just from fairy tales, but it would be fun to try.

  44. Chrissie D says:

I’d use the Little Red Riding Hood images to create a set of tins. So fun!

  45. Karen Mallory says:

I love this idea so much!! I think Sleeping Beauty would have many characters to use for the Tarot! Now to decide if I want to use original version or friendly Disney version!

  55. Rhonda says:

I love the Fairy card. Such a fun idea.

  56. Michelle says:

I love tarot cards and to mix that with Grimms Fairy tales, what an excellent idea! I would use Hansel and Gretal, the witch and the candy house!

  57. Lou Conaway says:

I suspect I would use most of them and as many others as I could find on the site. The idea is brilliant and set my wheels turning. I started thinking what I could do with a full set of playing cards. Started to write what I was thinking so far about the playing cards and gave up, it would amount to at least 3 chapters! I so want to win this one to get me started!

  58. Denise Bryant says:

Love Rapunzel as The Hermit! Not familiar enough with the Tarot to know any others. I’d have to do some research!

What an amazing and inspiring project this one is! With so many cards to design, I’d clearly have to find a place for pretty much every image available.

  60. SusanB says:

Anything Tarot tends to draw me in. I’ve been musing about using characters from Agatha Christie novels for a Tarot. Poirot might be The Magician. Miss Marple as The High Priestess…

  62. Carol Slowik says:

I would use the Grimm Fairy Tales. Love!

  63. Jennie Ingram says:

If I were to go with the Grimm’s theme, I’d use the Fairy Godmother as the Empress card. But I’d also be tempted to do a Witchy Women themed tarot set, with the 18th Century Witches collage sheets.

  64. Kelli says:

Tarot and fairy tales?! Two of my favorite things. This is so clever and beautifully designed that I would buy these if I saw them in a store. To win them would be incredible! Is Beauty and the Beast a Grimm’s Fairy tale? If so, I think that would be a great Strength card.

  65. LeAnn says:

I would use Little Red Riding Hood for my cards.
