New Miniature Hardware, Apothecary Chest Tutorial!

Update! A newer post about Laura’s artwork is here.

Wow! I know, I’ve been saying “wow” a lot lately… but just look at this Witches Apothecary Chest by Design Team Member Laura Carson!

Laura’s chest uses the new Vanity Box with Drawers as the base: It evolved from being a larger version of the 1:12 Scale Jewelry Box, but then Laura requested drawers that could be opened from either side (of course you can choose to only open them from one side).

Here’s a bit from Laura’s blog post:

My idea for this apothecary was to make it look like it was alive, complete with feet, hands and lots of eyes (I have the image of the eyes for you on my blog post).

I’ve made all kinds of witchy stuff (bottles, books, bookstand, scrolls, chalice, potion bowl, hourglass, and wand) to go on top of and inside the chest. Notice I’ve used a set of hands as part of a book stand for the Spells and Potion Book (on the top of the chest).

The candles with faces are made from polymer clay which I demonstrate how to make in the video tutorial.

I love the candles with the faces… and Laura includes tons of tips about making those (and everything in this chest, like texture using eggshells and tissue paper) on her blog post.

Here’s Laura’s Witches Apothecary Chest Supply List.

Note: Laura has a second project today (with a second blog post — more info below) PLUS another photo highlighting those candles I love is down in the Giveaway section.

Laura made a haunted house with the Tealight Haunted House Kit with Base, and she cleverly covered the open roof of the house with paper to create a second floor (that’s also lit from inside like the main floor). Here’s a bit from her second blog post:

I started by assembling the house and painting it black then adding paper to the front and back. To add more interest to the house, I used strips of decorative paper to create a roof, gluing the paper from the front of the house roofline to the back. I then used pieces of Black Dresden to dress-up the roof lines.

By adding paper to the roof lines, I could use an additional tea light on the back of the house to light up the second floor. I stuck the flame part into a round window on the back.

Note there’s a new collage sheet made for this project: Mini Halloween Darlings Half Sheet, with half-size versions of the little Halloween constructions (many hand colored) from the Halloween Darlings Collage Sheet! Plus a few extras have been added (characters facing the opposite direction or with recolored clothing).

Here’s Laura’s Lighted Halloween House Supply List and blog post.
