ABCs Giftwrap
Few applications of decorative type are as endearing as the lettering used
to create children’s ABCs, especially as interpreted by the Victorians.
Among our earliest childhood memories, ABCs coaxed generations of young learners
into a world of language by using familiar rhymes and allegorical illustrations,
effectively serving as the building blocks that would lead to more expansive
reasoning and complex communication.
As exemplified in the Apple Pie ABC series, Victorian images of idealized, cherubic children are used to illustrate a well-known 18th century rhyme. Often mass-produced as woodblock illustrations in children’s books of the era, the Apple Pie rhyme was most famously illustrated by Kate Greenaway.
