House Room Boxes plus Attic Silhouettes

Filed under Bella Ayers, Gifts/Decorations, Giveaways, Kristin Batsel, Rhonda Secrist Thomas, Shannon Cooper

Note: most of the links on this post no longer work, as we moved to a new Web site in 2018. However, you can see the supply lists for both projects on the new site: Bella’s Dreadfully Delightful Manor and Kristin’s Ornaments.

What’s New Today? New House Shrines!

We have new House Room Boxes in FOUR designs! Plus there is cute new art by THREE Design Team Members using them! Plus more ornaments using this month’s kit!

Let’s start with this fun 1:24 scale room box by Design Team Coordinator Miz Bella (Kim Ayers)! Bella used the larger House Room Box with Cubbies. It’s 12-1/2″ tall by 8-1/2″ wide by 3″ deep (plus it has dividers that create four approx 4-1/4″ wide x 4-1/4″ tall “rooms”). The “rooms” work well for 1/2″ scale (1:24) furniture.

Did I mention it includes siamese Raggedy Ann dolls?! Who bounce on springs on a shabby couch!? “Not having a prissy perfect dollhouse meant of course that it would have to be inhabitable by none other than The Dreadfuls.”

Ha! Yes, The Dreadfuls are back and have quite a few colorful stories in this outing. And Bella includes all kinds of tips, including how to get the lumpy couch (on a tiny 1:24 scale couch).

“The entire project started out when I was sent the House Room Box with 4 Cubbies from Alpha Stamps to play with. I knew that I’d want to make it some sort of a dollhouse, but didn’t want a prissy perfect one. I also wanted a fireplace, but didn’t have one that was 1:24 scale. Which meant that I’d have to try to figure out how to make my own because a. I’m way too cheap and b. I’m trying to create stuff with items I already have here at home.”

Read more (and see more photos and tips) in Bella’s blog post. And here’s her Supply List.

Now we’re moving on to half the size of that house that Bella used! Both Shannon Cooper and Rhonda Secrist Thomas used the new Mini House Room Boxes for Christmasy projects. Both of these mini houses are overall approx. 6-1/2″ tall by 4-1/4″ wide by 1-1/2″ deep. One has dividers for 4 cubbies below the roof, and the other has one large “room” space.

Shannon made this adorable shrine (first photo at left), that’s full of backlit silhouettes. Rhonda also used that shrine with cubbies, and also made the shrine below with gnomes: “I love watching birds out of my window, especially on a snowy day. I nicked some of their seed for my little elf to use for his winged friends.”

Each of them came up with their own version of a technique to allow you to open and close the top “attic” (so you can get to the switch to turn the tea light on or off).

Back to Shannon’s artwork:

“My brain couldn’t get passed “silhouette” so I continued the theme and chopped several of the Ornament Layers away from the frames, painted them black, then glued them in the rooms of the house. The little girl on the stairs is my favorite because she is shadowed behind the lit tree. Creating the tree is as easy as pie, and it took about 5 minutes. After painting my tree black, I cut out a section of thin plastic (mine is toy packaging) and glued it to the back of the tree. I colored the ornaments and tinsel with Sharpies. That’s it.”

Read more (and see more photos — and those tips on getting to the attic light) on both Shannon’s and Rhonda’s blog posts.

I love these ornaments by Kristin Batsel!

Kristin shows all kinds of ideas, from colored pencils to paint. And tips on applying glitter to just the ground, and getting stripes around the edges even. Then, those last 2 ornaments at right are priceless:

“Last but not least, here’s a great way to preserve some Christmas memories. I’ve taken photos of my girls every year since my older daughter was born. Back in the days before digital cameras, I would take 20 some pictures and then wait for the film to be developed. I always ended up with several outtakes that were not “card worthy”.

“Here is my favorite. My younger daughter was almost two, and in every.single.picture she screamed “tee hee!” My older daughter, who was not excited about taking Christmas photos in the first place, could not hide her exasperation.

“Nine years later, the girls agreed to recreate that photo for me for our 2013 Christmas card. That card is one of my all time favorites, and I will love having this ornament on my tree. I am planning on going through all my old cards and making more photo ornaments. Wouldn’t these make great gifts for family?”

Read more (and see more photos) in Kristin’s blog post. And here’s her Supply List.
